Delivering a comprehensive understanding of the legislation involved with drug administration and the procedures for safe


In February 2006 a report was written by the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI), because Care Homes were failing to meet the standards for administering medication. Some of the problems that have been reported are:

  • The wrong drug was administered
  • Too much medication was given
  • Too little medication was given
  • Medication was missed, or was given too late or too early
  • Staff administering medication, were not adequately trained
  • Medication was left unattended in a communal place, or was lost
  • They ran out of the specific medication or medication was overstocked and out of date
  • Mistakes in records of medicine administration
  • Medication was not administered in accordance with NMC Code of Practice

By the end of the training course you will be able to:

  • Understand the legislation involved with drug administering
  • Follow procedures set for safe administration of medication
  • Correctly use a Medication Administration Record (MAR) sheet
  • Understand the importance of confidentiality and security in all procedures of drug administering
  • Have knowledge of the regulations of how medicines should be stored safely, and recorded when received into the Care Home and returned to Pharmacy. Stock control of medicines and creams dressings and lotions, stock rotation, storage and documentation of Control Drugs.
